Discover the wild and unspoilt south of Mauritius on The Wild South Cliff and Forest Hike, a scenic adventure through dramatic coastal landscapes, lush forests, rivers, waterfalls and natural pools.


Explore the famous Gris Gris coastline, including the spectacular La Roche qui Pleure, hidden waterfalls and secluded natural swimming spots surrounded by untouched scenery.


Approximately 90% of the route is relatively easy and mostly flat. However, three technical sections involving steep descents, rocky terrain and rope-assisted climbs require good mobility, balance and upper-body strength.


With breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and the beauty of Mauritius' southern wilderness, this guided hike offers a memorable experience for active nature lovers.

Meeting Point – Gris Gris Public Beach

Meet your hiking guide at Gris Gris Public Beach at 8:50 AM.


Stop 1 – Gris Gris Viewpoint

Begin your hike with breathtaking views of the rugged southern coastline and the Indian Ocean.


Stop 2 – La Roche qui Pleure

Discover the famous rock formation where powerful waves crash against the cliffs, creating a spectacular natural display.


Stop 3 – Forest Trails and River Crossings

Continue through lush forest paths and natural landscapes, crossing rivers along the way. Expect wet footwear and uneven terrain.


Stop 4 – Natural Pool

Reach a beautiful natural pool surrounded by untouched scenery. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this hidden spot.


Stop 5 – Mamzelle Waterfall Viewpoint

Discover the scenic viewpoint overlooking the waterfall and surrounding forest.


Stop 6 – Mamzelle Waterfall

Age Requirements

Minimum age: 10 years.

Participation outside this age range may be considered with prior notice and approval, subject to an individual assessment.


What to Bring

Hiking shoes with good grip (no open-toe footwear).

1.5–2 litres of drinking water per person.

Small daypack (10–20 L).

Cap or hat and sunglasses.

Mosquito or insect repellent.

Lightweight, breathable sportswear.

Swimwear and a towel (optional, for a refreshing swim in the natural pool).

Snacks such as energy bars, fruit or nuts.

Personal medication and allergy information.

Rain jacket in case of drizzle.


Important: River crossings are compulsory, and your shoes should be expected to get wet. You may bring spare shoes for after the hike or wear water shoes for the river crossings. Sturdy hiking or sports shoes with good grip are essential for safety on slippery rocky sections.


Physical Requirements

A basic level of fitness is required, along with good mobility, balance and sufficient strength to support your own body weight when using a rope.

Although most of the route is relatively flat, three technical sections require additional care:

Descent to the river: A steep, potentially slippery 60° descent with limited handholds. A rope provides support over approximately 15–20 metres, requiring good upper-body strength.

Rocky section: Beach and rocky terrain leading to the natural pool, requiring good mobility and balance.

Ascent to the waterfall: A very steep, almost vertical 30-metre ascent using a rope for support. Good upper-body strength and confidence on steep terrain are required.


Not Suitable For

Pregnant women.

Babies carried in backpacks.

Children under 10 years old.

Individuals with mobility or balance impairments.

Elderly individuals with health issues or limited stamina.

People with serious medical conditions.

Individuals recovering from surgery or injury.

Participants unable to comfortably support their own body weight using their arms.


Important Information

The hike is classified as Grade 1/4 – Easy overall, but includes three technical sections.

River crossings are compulsory, and footwear will get wet.

Some rocky sections may be slippery.

Participants must follow the guide's instructions throughout the hike.

The activity is subject to weather and trail conditions.

Participants should arrive on time for the 8:50 AM meeting.

The hike takes place in a natural environment with uneven terrain.
